Day 1 Construction

If you haven't read my previous posts about our addition and progress, make sure to check them out first:

Yesterday was Day 1 of the construction! They were here bright and early at 7:30am and had about 6 guys tearing stuff down. They started by tearing out the deck railing, adding additional support posts underneath and ripping off siding. In the afternoon they put up the framework and gave us a good idea of how things will look!

Below are pictures of the progress! (Click on any of the photos to see them larger)

Walk-in Closet! Prior to Construction

Finally it is here! The guys are working on the walk-in closet as I type!

If you haven't read the post I posted on Monday the 28th, be sure to read that first to get all the details on what's going on! You can read it HERE!

I thought I would post a few 'before' photos of our master bedroom and deck. Currently the deck wraps around the west side of the house and has an entrance into our master bedroom. We never use this entrance or exit in the house. 1- because we have a great sliding door off the kitchen to the main and largest part of the deck, and 2- because it's almost impossible to unlock/lock that door - it sticks so bad!

Soon none of this will look the same. It's sad to see it go, but we've never spent any time on the small deck area off the bedroom so it will be nice to have that space put to use with all my Mike's clothes!

More to come!

Decisions, Decisions, New addition!

When we first bought our house in 2009, Mike and I decided it would be great to do something with the extra space on our deck that we never used. We thought about putting in a pool (okay, maybe that was my idea) or making it a master bathroom off our bedroom. One day over a year ago, I was thinking about how little closet space we have in the bedrooms. Why not take the space on the west side of the house (approximately 6' x 10') and make it a walk-in closet!? I mentioned the idea to Mike and he agreed!

We decided we really wouldn't need to two closets in our bedroom. Since the spare bedroom and master bedroom share a wall (split into a closet for each room), why not close up our original closet in the master and open it completely in the spare bedroom. That way we would have a walk-in closet in the master, and be adding closet space to the spare bedroom as well. A win-win situation!

After a lot of thought and research, we decided to go for it! Last fall we got in contact with a coworker of Mike's, Doug, that does construction outside of school (he's the industrial tech teacher at the high school) and he came by to see if it was even plausible and give us some estimates. Thankfully, he said it was definitely do-able and a great idea!

Here are photos of the bedrooms before any work is done! Ignore the mess in the pictures. I kept my clothes (what I could fit) in the master bedroom closet behind the curtains and Mike kept his clothes (what he could fit) in the spare bedroom closet.

The first step in the process would be closing our closet in the master bedroom and fully opening the closet in the spare bedroom. Since it was an indoor job and Carroll had about 2 weeks off for Christmas break Doug said he would be able to do that portion of the closet over break. We ended up heading home to Garner for the Christmas break and came home to a new closet in the spare bedroom and a blank wall in the master bedroom.

The following are photos of what we came home to! Oh and we came home to a HUGE mess of dust! Yuck!

(closet opened entire length of shared wall and door widened)

Once we got home from Christmas break we immediately got started on getting the walls and new closet bi-fold doors painted. The spare bedroom, spare bedroom closet, and the new walk-in closet will all get new carpet when everything is finished. In the photo above of the finished spare closet, you can see the two different kinds of carpet - the left side is how small the spare closet was. The closet continues all the way to the west wall on the right.

Mike's parents came down the following weekend and his dad helped us get all the hardware, shelving, and rods put in the closet so we could use it - since we no longer had anything in our bedroom.

Here is the closet being used as our main closet until the spring/summer when the walk-in is finished. This is before the doors were hung.

Here are the after photos of the master bedroom painted and the spare bedroom closet with the doors painted and hung.

So glad to have all of that done and finally May is here and we started the next step! The walk-in closet! Stay tuned for updates on the process!
